We have had a very busy Summer term so far! Starting with a trip to Blackpool to organising the summer fair! Some of our writing has been based around our trip to Blackpool. The children wrote persuasive leaflets to advertise all the attractions in Blackpool. We were using questions, commands and exclamations in our writing! We’ve also been researching about wildlife in the Lake District so that we can write our own non chronological reports about it!
In Maths, we have been learning about money and measurement. We made our own potions by measuring capacity and we found change by buying items from our countryside shop!
In NICER we have made tie dye t-shirts ready to sell at our summer fair and then we wrote instructions explaining how to make them! Over the next few weeks we are going to be very busy using the TASC wheel to help us design and create bird boxes, bird feeders, photo frames and jam all ready to sell! Please join us from 1-3pm on Thursday 13th July! Come and grab a burger from the BBQ and chill out at our very own beach!

Some of the main activities in Year 2 – Weeks Beginning Monday 23rd and 30th January 2017
In English this week, Year 2 have been looking at different sentence types and focussing upon using questions and question marks. The children wrote reports about India based around transport, music, clothing and food in that country. The children listened to Bhangra music, smelt spices and felt different types of clothing to help them to find out more information. They also used QR coding to research facts about India which they could include in their reports.
In Maths, they have been adding two, two digit numbers. They have used practical objects, pictures and number lines to help them to find the total of two numbers. The children then applied their own knowledge of addition to help them to solve word problems in relation to flight. They chose from the methods they had learned earlier in the week.
In Science, the children have been investigating what a plant needs to grow. They have discussed fair testing and made predictions. They planned and carried out an investigation by putting plants in different conditions. This coming week, they will be recording the results.
In NICER, the children have been using a TASC wheel to design and make something which flies. The children have chosen to design and make kites! They have been looking at which materials will be the most appropriate and why. This week, the children will be building their own kites and writing instructions about how to make one!
Some of the main activities in Year 2 – Weeks Beginning Monday 2nd, 9th and 16th January 2017
In Year 2 the new challenge pack this term is Up Up and Away. The children will be learning about early aviation all the way through to the first man walking on the moon! The children have helped to design their own role play area and used a TASC wheel to decide they were going to make the solar system out of balloons and papier mache. They then mixed primary colours so that they could make the correct colour for the different planets. Since then, Year 2 have been on a fantastic trip to RAF Cosford, where the children looked at different planes through history and even took a ride on a 4D simulator! It’s been a super start to the term!

They have also been learning how to use expanded noun phrases to help them to add detail to their writing. The children also wrote their own poems called ‘If I had wings.’ They used their imagining learning power tool to think about what they would see, feel, hear and taste if they had wings. The writing outcomes were brilliant!
In Maths, the children have been focussing on shape, time and measurement! They have been taking part in lots of practical activities to help them with their learning!
In Science, the children have been planning an experiment about what a plant needs to grow. They have been learning about fair tests and which variables need to change or stay the same.
Some of the main activities in Year 2 – Week Beginning Monday 5th December 2016
Again, the children have been very busy in Year Two! In NICER they have been using a TASC wheel to help them with their challenge outcome. The children have decided that they would like to sell a DVD which will tell the story of fire creatively. The children have acted out the gunpowder plot, drama with Rama and Sita and a news report about the Great Fire of London, using the green screen to take us back in time! The children will also be selling candles and snowmen cupcakes at the school’s Christmas Fayre!
The children enjoyed a visit from a super pantomime company as they acted out the story of Cinderella. Year 2 children re-wrote the story of Cinderella with an alternative ending. They used similes to help them to describe the characters and setting and produced some fantastic writing outcomes!
In Maths, we have been using arrays to multiply and divide. We’ve used lots of different resources to help us including Christmas presents!
The children also performed in their class assembly, where they acted out the different stories which they have been learning about. They played London’s burning on the recorders and sang a song to explain their learning to their family and friends.

Over the past two weeks, the children in Year 2 have been very busy! They had a letter from the Mayor of London, who asked the children to redesign the houses in London after the great fire! They made predictions about which materials would burn the quickest and then they tested it out! They found out that wood burned the quickest and that they should redesign the houses of London using brick. The children also made their own model of Pudding Lane by building Tudor houses. They then watched how easily it was for the fire to spread because of the materials they were built from!
In English, they have written a letter from Guy Fawkes warning his friend Thomas Wintour about the gunpowder plot and to stay away on 5th November! They have also been writing a diary entry based upon Samuel Pepys, using adjectives to describe what they could see, hear and how they felt during 1666.
In Maths, the children have been subtracting and learning about the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction. The children have also had lots of fun in forest school, making their own fires and cooking noodles and nachos on them!
Some of the main activities in Year 2 – Week Beginning Monday 3rd October 2016
This week in NICER, Year 2 have been collaborating with Year 1 to learn all about Martin Luther King. The children learned about his famous speech, ‘I have a dream’ and worked in groups to create their own acrostic poems or to detail what their dreams and hopes are for the future. They have also thought of the best idea for their challenge outcome. The children have decided to create mosaic tiles based upon the Isle of Struay – where Katie Morag lives.
In PE, the children have been learning about Scottish country dancing and they have been composing their own routines!
The children have been describing the Isle of Struay in English by using their senses to see, hear and feel what it is like to live on the island. In Maths, the children have been solving lots of problems linked to subtraction. They have been using pictures and practical resources to help them!
Some of the main activities in Year 2 – Week Beginning Monday 5th September 2016
Year 2 have had a fantastic start to the term! The children began the term with the whole school Big Adventure to Dudley Canals. The children followed clues on a trail, went on an exciting boat ride and took part in a treasure hunt! This helped them with their positional language and gave them lots of ideas for their challenge outcome; how can we transform an area in our school? The children will be using a TASC wheel to produce a quality piece of art work based around their big adventure.
The children have also been participating one morning a week, in forest school. They have been building fires, exploring living and non-living things and they have created their own 3D map of Katie Morag’s island.
The children have also taken part in the school’s annual RPA bake off! The children used a TASC wheel and decided that they wanted to make a lighthouse cake which linked to their class book, Katie Morag. They chose three different flavours and stacked them on top of each other to create the lighthouse.
In English, the children have been writing a recount based upon their Big Adventure and they have also been writing instructions about how to make a lighthouse cake! In Maths, the children have been super, independent learners! Different groups of children have been working in the pit and using their success criteria to help them to get out! They have been ordering, partitioning and adding numbers!
